The history of the location

Megalochori is a picturesque, lively village with friendly, lively residents. The central square is the heart of the village where locals gather in traditional cafes to relax and have fun creating a warm atmosphere. It is definitely worth spending an evening here to be part of this feeling and try the local dishes under the natural shade provided by the trees. You can find traditional taverns, cafes and shops in other corners of the village.

If you wander the cobbled paths you will admire unique buildings such as neoclassical houses, mansions and old caves with wooden doors and high fences that were used as protection against pirates. Many of them have been restored and thus give you the opportunity to see images dating back to the 17th century. Another landmark of Megalochori is the ornate rocks of the impressive churches, two of which are located in the center of the village. There are more adorable churches and chapels to explore throughout the village. The chapel of Agios Nikolaos, for example, is built in a fantastic location on the rocks of the caldera, from where you can enjoy a spectacular sunset and a stunning view in a dazzling, peaceful setting. The location of the village offers stunning views of the stunning caldera to the west and a vast valley to the east, full of vineyards that Megalochori is famous for. It also has three of the most important and excellent wineries, Boutari, Gavala and Antoniou, where you can tour and learn about the production and history of winemaking and, of course, enjoy unique volcanic varieties.
